The crown chakra, also called Sahasrara, is the 7th chakra and the last of the 7 (main) chakras. It’s probably the most complicated chakra to explain. To truly understand it, you have to have a certain (positive) attitude towards the mystical and supernatural.
In this article, we will first explain the meaning of the crown chakra. We will then look at the symptoms of a blocked crown chakra and show you five practical tips on how to open it.

What Is the Meaning of the Crown Chakra?
The crown chakra is the 7th chakra. It’s at the top of the energetic chakra system, just above the third eye chakra. It lies slightly above the head, at the crown of it, if you wish. That’s one of the reasons why it’s called crown chakra.
The color white (with a slight purple touch) and the element cosmos symbolize it. The element cosmos is insofar fascinating because it reflects the sense and meaning of the crown chakra.
The name of the crown chakra in Sanskrit is “Sahasrara“, which means “thousand”. The number thousand figuratively stands for infinity, a particularly relevant term in this context. As mentioned above, the crown chakra is associated with the universe, which is infinite.
Sahasrara stands for divinity and reaching a godlike state. It’s the bridge between humanity and godhood. It’s a stage in which you rise to the divine and strengthen your connection to the cosmos, the big picture. Should you ever be able to open your crown chakra, you will ascend to a transcendent state.
Transcendence is a term you may have come across if you dealt with the sixth chakra, the third eye chakra. Yet, where’s the difference?
Simply put, the third eye is the chakra that lets you see transcendence, while the crown chakra is the chakra that lets you live transcendence.
If you don’t know what transcendence is, here is a short definition of transcendence:
Transcendence describes the state in which you perceive things outside your (human) senses and your (human) consciousness.
Two terms that are also related to the crown chakra are self-knowledge and self-realization. Both reflect the meaning of the crown chakra. When you have found your self-knowledge and realize yourself, you can be sure that your crown chakra is open. However, as you can imagine, reaching this state is anything but easy.
However, the crown chakra also represents your spirituality, wisdom, and knowledge. Spirituality is the path to the universe that will bring you all-encompassing wisdom and knowledge. With an open crown chakra, you will be able to process and understand the cosmos’ knowledge.
When Is the Crown Chakra Blocked?
Unlike the other chakras you got to know before, the crown chakra can only be underactive. An overactive crown chakra is not possible because the cosmic energy is infinite.
When your crown chakra is open, you are in the transition stage between human and god. You can only reach this stage, as mentioned before, if you let spirituality into your life and strongly believe in becoming a divine being. In other words, you realize that your crown chakra is blocked when you still behave like a human being without access to universal knowledge and wisdom.
Some symptoms that come with a blocked crown chakra include:
- Suspicion or disbelief in spirituality.
- Secular thinking.
Physically, such a blockage usually manifests itself in:
- Sleeping problems.
- Weakened immune system.
- Various nervous disorders.
All mental and physical complaints linked to the other main chakras are considered an indication of a blocked crown chakra. This is because your crown chakra is always blocked when the other chakras are.
5 Tips on How to Open the Crown Chakra
For your crown chakra to open, all underlying chakras must be cleansed and in balance. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to do nothing more than “just” concentrate on your six other chakras to open your crown chakra. Once you have managed to keep the lower chakras in balance, you need to focus on the seventh and last chakra without neglecting the other six.
If you need general tips for opening chakras, we recommend the following article.
You must dedicate your life to spirituality and work hard and on a long-term basis to improve your connection between your body and the cosmos. You must understand that you, yourself as a human being, are finite. You must discard your ego to become part of the cosmos and truly understand transcendence. Your goal should be to believe in the cosmos and to devote yourself entirely to it.
Your own spirituality is therefore the linchpin in opening the crown chakra. While your own spirituality is a question of faith, we have put together some methods that will help you to work on opening your crown chakra (directly or indirectly).
Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) Meditation
Meditation is a beneficial method to open your chakras. A special kind of meditation, called chakra meditation, is incredibly helpful. When you perform this type of meditation, you meditate to heal a particular chakra. For example, you can do a root chakra meditation to heal it directly.
However, you can’t open the crown chakra by meditation alone. You have to bundle and balance all chakras in your energy system to open it. Yet meditation can help you do just that.
If you have little or no previous experience with meditation, check out our extensive article on meditation.
For your personal success, it’s important what kind of meditation you do and how often you do it. As you have already learned above, the path to an open crown chakra is strenuous and prolonged. That’s why it’s even more vital that you allow a meditation routine into your life to master this path successfully.
Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) Affirmations
Affirmations are sentences with which you can direct and control your subconscious in a desired direction. For them to work, you must formulate them actively, positively, and in the present.
Here are a few examples of crown chakra affirmations:
- I believe in the universe and its power.
- I am a part of the big picture.
- I love myself.
- I am the light.
- I believe in my spirituality.
- I deserve to be transcendent.
Repeat the above affirmations regularly (several times a day) for a few sessions in front of the mirror at home or work. You can also use your own affirmations, but you must phrase them correctly and repeat them to maximize their effect.
Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) Stones and Crystals
Stones and crystals are a method that is often mentioned when it comes to opening chakras. There are different types of stones and crystals:
- Healing stones for particular chakras.
- Healing stones for multiple chakras.
The difference is easy to explain. Healing stones for particular chakras help one specific chakras, while healing stones for multiple chakras have an overarching effect. You can use them for healing different chakras at the same time. We see the latter as particularly beneficial for the crown chakra since you have to keep all chakras in balance to open it.
Healing stones, particularly for the crown chakra, are the following:
- Rock crystal.
- Herkimer diamond.
- Indigo gabbro.
- Rutile quartz.
- White Agate.
If you want to use healing stones for multiple chakras at once, we recommend the following:
- Amethyst (crown chakra and third eye chakra).
- Carnelian (root chakra and sacral chakra).
- Agapit (heart chakra and throat chakra).
To open your crown chakra, you can place the stones on the crown of your head during a massage, hold them in your hand during meditation or decorate your apartment or house with them. The effects of each method, however, are different.
If you have direct contact with the healing stones, they will transfer energy directly to your body through vibrations. If you decorate your home with them, they transmit the energy into your environment, which your body absorbs indirectly. As you can imagine, the first method is more effective.
Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) Oils
Oils are, similar to stones and crystals, another way to open your crown chakra. With them, you can indirectly support the healing process of your Sahasrara.
Popular oils and aromas for the crown chakra are:
Apply the oils directly to the crown of your head while you meditate or use appropriate incense to help your crown chakra heal.
Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) Yoga
The fifth and last healing practice we would like to show you is yoga. Yoga is, besides meditation, a very effective method to support your energetic cleansing. A spiritual goal of yoga is to achieve enlightenment, making it go hand in hand with the state of an open crown chakra.
A pose that is repeatedly mentioned in connection with the crown chakra is Savasana, the corpse pose. In this pose, you lie down on the floor like a corpse, as the name already suggests.
Here are a few things you should pay special attention to while doing Savasana:
- Lie on your back.
- Stretch your legs hip-wide apart – the soles of your feet point outwards.
- The spine always remains straight.
- Shoulders rest on the floor.
- Your palms point upwards.
There is little to no physical movement in this pose. You focus entirely on your breath and faith, making it especially helpful to unburden your crown chakra energetically. Furthermore, you can do almost any yoga pose that affects your other chakras if they are blocked.
The crown chakra is the seventh chakra and the last of the seven main chakras. Its meaning stands for reaching a godlike state and is the ultimate final step of your spiritual journey. You can only achieve this state by putting aside your human limitations and ascending to divinity.
Opening the crown chakra is not an easy task. You must dedicate your life entirely to spirituality and your faith in the cosmos. To open this chakra, you need to make sure that your other chakras are in balance. Meditation, yoga, healing stones, oils, and affirmations are helpful methods that can help you do just that.
