The concept of meditation is well established and has been with mankind for a very long time. People invented different types of meditation over time. One of them is the chakra meditation.

With spiritual roots in Hinduism, chakra meditation is a form of meditation aimed at cleansing and keeping your chakras in balance.

In spiritual teachings, there are 7 main chakras all over your body all the way up to the top of the head. Their purpose is to regulate human energy and to control the flow of energy within the body. In doing so, each of these main chakras has a different role.

For example, if your fourth chakra, the so-called heart chakra is out of balance due to anger and sadness, you will find it difficult to let love and compassion into your life.

In this article, we’ll give you a complete overview of the topic of chakra meditation. You will learn what chakra meditation is and why it’s a good alternative to other types of meditation. Finally, we will give you free instructions on how to practice chakra meditation.

What Is Chakra Meditation

Chakra meditation is a spiritual form of meditation that is designed to help you open and balance your 7 chakras. It focuses mainly on blocked chakras. A well-executed chakra meditation, allows you to consciously cleanse, open and balance several chakras.

If you have no experience with the 7 chakras or never meditated before, we recommend our following articles:

In this article, we assume a certain basic understanding of the 7 chakras and the concept of meditation, which is why you should really have a look at these articles before you continue reading here.

Why Chakra Meditation

A blocked chakra can cause both physical and emotional damage. That’s why you should work on opening it as soon as you notice it.

However, not only blocked, but also overactive chakras are an issue. Since each chakra represents one or more emotional states, overactive energy centers are as harmful as underactive ones.

Therefore, you should learn how to gain control over your chakras and how to balance them. Chakra meditation is an excellent way to do this.

The brilliant thing about chakra meditation is the fact that it combines the advantages of a balanced chakra with the advantages of meditation. As you might know, many advantages of meditation are scientifically proven, as for example (linked are studies on the respective advantages):

Your general self-perception is increased through meditation, which also gives you a better perception of your chakras. This makes it easier for you to work with the respective energy centers, because you can only work on the things you are aware of, after all.

To enhance the positive effects of chakra meditation you can also add certain mudras and mantras.

To summarize the key point of the last chapters in a single sentence: Through chakra meditation, you can achieve a state of balanced chakras.

Depending on which chakra you want to balance, the benefits for you and your health vary. In the following section, we will give you an overview of the effects of unbalanced chakras and why you can eliminate them through chakra meditation.

Perform a Chakra Meditation

Through different types of meditation, you will experience different advantages. Whether walking meditation, chakra meditation or guided meditation: Each type of meditation has a unique power and helps you in an individual way.

Chakra meditation is a very individual and advanced form of meditation. In order to do it successfully, you need to focus your thoughts on the goal of balancing your chakras. This means that you will do a specific chakra meditation with the mindset, to do this just because you want to balance your chakras.

Therefore, the two possibilities of Chakra Meditation techniques are:

  1. Chakra meditation with a focus on a specific chakra
  2. Chakra meditation for several chakras or even all 7 chakras

In order to get a successful output, the next step is to answer the following questions:

  • Do you want to balance an overactive or blocked chakra or do you want to keep a well-balanced chakra in balance??
  • Do you want to focus on one or more chakras?
  • Where would you like to meditate?
  • Would you like to combine chakra meditation with another type of meditation? For example, you can do walking meditation, yoga meditation or guided meditation and focus on your chakras. In this way, you can make almost all types of meditation a chakra meditation.

Once you made up your mind about this you will know what your chakra goals are, where you will meditate, and whether you will combine chakra meditation with another type of meditation.

Finally, memorize the position of each chakra:

  • Root Chakra: at the beginning of the spine
  • Sacral Chakra: at the belly button
  • Solar Plexus Chakra: above the belly button
  • Heart Chakra: at the heart
  • Throat Chakra: at the throat
  • 3rd Eye Chakra: at the forehead between your eyes
  • Crown Chakra: at the top or slightly above the head

How to Chakra Meditation: Basics

No matter for which chakra you want to do a chakra meditation, the first steps are always the same.

  1. First, memorize the meanings and locations of each chakra.
  2. Go to the place where you decided you want to meditate (see above).
  3. Remove distractions.
  4. Make yourself comfortable by sitting or lying down.
  5. Close your eyes and slowly breathe in and out through your nose (you can also leave your eyes open, but especially for beginners it is easier to meditate with your eyes closed).
  6. Notice how your mind slowly calms down.
  7. After the first few breaths, you start to focus on the chakra you want to balance.
  8. Optional: If you want to cover several chakras in one chakra meditation, repeat step 7 as often as necessary – one chakra at a time.

How much time you want to spend on this, is up to you. You can set yourself an alarm clock. We recommend a duration of 5 to 20 minutes. Less is more in the beginning, especially if you’re in the phase of developing your meditation routine. Just try what works best for you.

How to Chakra Meditation: Balancing and Healing

Now that we have shown you how to prepare and perform the chakra meditation on a more general level, let’s talk about how to focus on the individual chakras.

Root Chakra Meditation

Pay full attention to the beginning of your spine.

Imagine breathing in and out through your chakra. The air goes to the beginning of your spine when you inhale and to the nose when you exhale. With each breath feel the energy in the first chakra and how it becomes brighter and stronger. Imagine it as a ball, a red fireball. Feel this red fireball pulling you down to the ground. Feel the connection to the earth and the safety it gives to you.

Notice how you feel physically, emotionally and spiritually and what you experience.

Sacral Chakra Meditation

Pay full attention to the area around your belly button.

Imagine breathing in and out through your chakra. The air goes up to your belly button when you inhale and up to your nose when you exhale. Visualize the energy in the second chakra as an orange ball and how it becomes stronger and brighter. Feel how it radiates from your belly button from the inside to the outside into your surroundings. Feel how you gradually feel more sexually balanced.

Notice how you feel physically, emotionally and mentally and what you experience.

Solar Plexus Chakra Meditation

Pay full attention to the area between your belly button and your heart.

Now breathe in and out through your third chakra. The air goes over your belly button when you inhale and up to your nose when you exhale. Visualize a golden yellow ball, which becomes brighter and stronger with each breath. Focus your consciousness on this ball and feel how the energy radiates stronger and stronger and becomes brighter. Feel your determination.

Notice how you feel physically, emotionally and mentally and what you experience.

Heart Chakra Meditation

Pay full attention to your heart. If you want, place your hands on top of each other on your heart during the meditation for a stronger connection with your heart chakra.

Imagine breathing in and out through your heart chakra. The air goes down to your heart chakra as you inhale and all the way through your nose as you exhale. Visualize the energy. A green ball that becomes brighter and stronger. Fully enter this ball on a spiritual level. Notice the love it radiates and feel how your feelings become more balanced.

Notice how you feel physically, emotionally and mentally and what you experience.

Throat Chakra Meditation

Pay full attention to your throat.

Imagine breathing in and out through your throat chakra. Visualize your throat chakra as a blue ball of light. With each breath, it becomes stronger and brighter. Focus so much on it that it feels like you are becoming this ball. Feel how it gives you self-confidence, freedom, and empathy for other people.

Notice how you feel physically, emotionally and mentally and what you experience.

3rd Eye Chakra Meditation

Pay full attention to the spot between your eyes on your forehead.

Imagine breathing through the “third eye”. Visualize with each exhalation the energy in the third eye and how it becomes stronger. Imagine the forehead chakra as an indigo-colored ball of light. With each breath, it becomes stronger and brighter. Try to reach a higher level of self-perception. Feel how your consciousness radiates throughout the room.

Notice how you feel physically, emotionally and mentally and what you experience.

Crown Chakra Meditation

Before attempting a crown chakra meditation, remember that an active crown chakra can only be achieved if your other six chakras are balanced.

Respecting the 12 Karmic Laws can support this.

Now focus your full attention on the top of your head, even slightly above your head. Focus on the feeling of a godly connection. During meditation imagine a golden or silver, bright light that appears slightly above your head. This light is what connects you to yourself, the world and your mind. Dedicate yourself with full energy to spirituality and wisdom.

Notice how you feel physically, emotionally and mentally and what you experience.
